NCKU Project of Promoting Academic Excellence &
Developing World Class Research Centers
NCKU has been chosen to be involved in the Program for Promoting Academic
Excellence of Universities, and is going to receive a government grant of
1.7 billion NT dollars (1,000NTD 30USD) per year for five consecutive years,
Taiwan’s Ministry of Education (MOE) announced on the 9th of October,
2005. The Program for Promoting Academic Excellence of Universities is a five-year
project with a 50 billion NT dollar budget. NCKU will use the grant to promote
the teaching, research environment and internationalization of the university,
with the aim of leaping into the World Top 100 Universities within 10 years.
Established in 1931, NCKU is a research-oriented comprehensive university
with a teaching hospital and medical center. Cooperating with the Academia
Sinica, Industrial Technology Research Institute of Taiwan, National Applied
Research Laboratories, Small and Medium Enterprise Incubation Centers in the
Ministry of Economic Affairs, and other national and international academic
institutions, NCKU has been the major research base in South Taiwan. NCKU
has occupied an unshakable and irreplaceable position in both Tainan Science-Based
Industrial Park and Kaohsiung Science-Based Industrial Park, playing a similar
role that played by Stanford University or the University of California -
Berkeley to Silicon Valley.
NCKU’s efforts in promoting teaching quality have been widely recognized
and reflected in the surveys conducted by nationally-known magazines, such
as Common Wealth, Global View, and Cheers. For the past 12 consecutive years,
NCKU has topped the list in the category of “Enterprises’ Choices
of University Graduates”. NCKU’s research performance has been
out-standing as well: the number of patent registrations and projects of the
National Science Council (NSC) and Academic Cooperation has topped all universities
in Taiwan, and the number of papers published in international journals and
nationally sponsored research funds are in the second place.
To accelerate the process of internationalization, a specific office has been
set up to co-ordinate international cooperation and relevant academic affairs,
scholarships are regulated and offered to international students, faculty
members are encouraged to participate in inter-national academic activities,
distinguished international scholars are actively recruited, academic interactions
and cooperation with famous international institutions are established and
strengthened, lecturing and teaching in English are greatly promoted, and
so on.
